You are planning to do a science research project with your class that requires them to do research on the web and interview a scientist. Last year when you did this project, you found that some students copied and pasted information found on the web, and as a result plagiarized sites without realizing it. Because of your school’s filtering software, you found that students were being blocked from sites that they needed for their research. You have requested that your technology coordinator stop filtering for a 2-week period during this project. The coordinator has agreed to your request as long as you create a set of rules that students must follow while in the lab and that you monitor their usage. The technology coordinator does not want to deal with parents who are concerned about students accessing inappropriate material as well as other safety/privacy issues associated with the web. The technology coordinator also warns you that the school has also been experiencing issues with computer viruses, and she wants to make sure students are careful about downloading files from the web.
You have decided to meet with a few other teachers in your building to brainstorm a list of rules for how students should behave in the computer lab.
Assignment: Part I: Group Work. As a group, create a list of at least 5 rules for students to follow in the computer lab that will address the common pitfalls in Internet Use.
Part II: Sharing. As a class, we will do a round where each group will share 1 rule with the class. Each group will add one new rule. We will do a second round if groups have additional rules that have not been added.
Class Rules:
1. Don't download anything until you ask permission from a teacher and/or librarian. 2. No inappropriate websites. 3. Keep searches on the topic. 4. No getting on chatrooms and social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. 5. Upload things to a specific place such as SafeAssign, so that no plagarism occurs.
6. Don't give out personal information.
7. No e-mailing unless for academic purposes.
8. Keep your computer screen turned towards the teacher. (if applicable)
9. Try to use websites that begin with "https."
10. Use Google Custom Search.
